What is Mend Well? Mend Well, LLC is a company owned by physical therapist Nancy Eldridge, servicing Boston’s MetroWest region.  Mend Well therapists specialize in BioSynchronisitics®, a whole body wellness approach of manual physical therapy for various neuromusculoskeletal symptoms.

Why do I need Mend Well’s services? Everyone’s structural alignment is challenged each day for a variety of reasons such as repetitive motion, overuse, a misstep or fall, medical conditions, stress and previous surgery.  As a response to these challenges your body compensates by shifting its center of gravity away from its optimal position.  This leads to symptoms such as pain, fatigue, strain, muscle spasm, and tightness. The activities you once enjoyed may now be difficult or impossible.  Our goal is to improve your mobility and function by restoring equilibrium to your body.

What services does Mend Well provide? A comprehensive physical therapy assessment and individualized care plan will be provided during the first session.  BioSynchronistics® and other manual therapy techniques will be used to address symptoms of pain and dysfunction, and to correct underlying mislalignment.  We then develop customized strengthening, stretching and stability programs to meet your individual needs.

What is BioSynchronistics®? BioSynchronistics® (developed by Cheryl Wilbur, PT, and Carol Tschirpke, PT, of Quality Physical Therapy in Sturbridge, MA) is a combination of multiple manual physical therapy techniques effective in treating the whole body while addressing common neuromusculoskeletal conditions.  As mentioned above, daily modern life can cause your body to deviate from its natural biomechanical equilibrium into malalignment.  BioSynchronistics® systematically corrects this underlying malalignment and restores your body’s biomechanical equilibrium.  Now your body can let go of painful compensatory postures, giving you lasting relief.

How many sessions are required? The number of sessions required will vary depending on the seriousness and longevity of your symptoms.  You should know by 4 visits or so if this treatment is helping.  Visit frequency will decrease as you improve.  When your goals have been met you may want to schedule periodic “tune-up” appointments.

Are these visits covered by my insurance? No.  Mend Well therapists provide a wellness program. We treat your entire body, not a specific diagnosis.  This is not considered a medical necessity.  If requested, we will provide receipts for your PT sessions; however, we do not code diagnoses or treatment.

Why should I pay privately for Mend Well services, rather than go to a physical therapist that accepts my insurance? Mend Well physical therapists address the body as a whole. You are not just a diagnosis code to us! The reality of healthcare today is that insurance companies govern the way healthcare is delivered by controlling the number of visits and what treatments are reimbursable. Often holistic physical therapy, which includes wellness and preventative care, is not covered. We do not believe that this in your best interest.

Many insurance companies have increased physical therapy co-payments to $25-$50 per visit. Traditional outpatient physical therapy is 2-3 visits/week for 6 weeks. Those co-pays can add up fast. If your plan has a deductible, that should also be considered. We realize cost is a concern. Although every client has different needs and therefore a different treatment plan, typically, goals are met in less than half the visits of standard physical therapy. Mend Well’s holistic approach addresses your dysfunction and pain quickly and effectively, in the end costing you less money than physical therapy covered by insurance.

How can I prepare for treatment? Wear loose, comfortable clothing.  Please do not wear jeans or heavy shirts and sweaters.  The way your clothes fall on your body actually helps us determine asymmetry, twists and compressed areas.  We are able to treat through light clothing.  Also, drink plenty of water before and after your session.

How is this different from chiropractic? There are many definitions of chiropractic; however, they usually agree that chiropractic treatment involves the location and correction of vertebral subluxations through adjustment.  According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, a classic adjustment involves a high velocity, low amplitude thrust.  As opposed to this direct technique, we use gentle, indirect manual therapy to release neuromuscular and fascial restrictions.  This gives your body the space it needs to find its optimal alignment for health.

Is this like massage therapy? According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, massage therapy is the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of normalizing those tissues. The BioSynchronistics® techniques we use are a lighter touch than most forms of massage.  Our focus is to realign and balance all systems of your body.  This then leads to muscle relaxation.

Can Mend Well therapy be used in conjunction with other types of physical treatment and activity? Yes.  Some complementary forms of treatment/activity are massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, yoga, and physical fitness exercises.  The timing and coordination of all sessions is important for optimum benefit, so please discuss other treatment you are receiving with your Mend Well therapist.

Will the benefit I experience last? Usually, yes.  Treatment involves addressing and taking away layers of compensation, like peeling an onion to get to its core.  Each session builds on itself, allowing for a lasting result over time.  By the completion of your visits, you should feel significantly better with a more normal alignment, decreased pain, and increased ease of movement.
